Preparing for end of school year and summer reading.

Do you have a Prince William County Library Card? If you don’t have one yet, work with a grownup in your house to get a library card this week. We are getting ready for summer reading and a library card will help you get more books to read! Visit theSudley Library Summer Readingpage for more information and directions.

Soon, you will have an opportunity to return your library books to Sudley. Please look for all of your Sudley books and put them in a safe place together. Your backpack is a great spot to keep these. If you need a list of your library books, please email Mrs. Lunsford,lunsfosl@pwcs.edu. A list was also sent to your school email address.

 UPDATE 4/13/2020                                   PLEASE READ!  :)

Hope that you all had a wonderful spring break!  Here are some things I would like you each to do before we start our online learning this week.  If you are unable to do any of these things, just send me an email at freedyak@pwcs.edu and we discuss other options!

1) DOWNLOAD I-STATION:
*If you can, download I-station for home by clicking on the link and follow the instructions.  iStation at Home.docx.

2) ACCESS YOUR EMAIL
           *Log into Microsoft 365 https://www.office.com/
*Sign in the way you normally would with your email and password.  If you forget yours you can send me a text/email
            * Send me an email letting me say hi and let me know if you were able to download I-station

Why is this important?  This is how I will be communicating with you throughout the week, how you can contact me, and also the way you will access CLEVER for now on INSTEAD OF going through the Sudley library page.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Welcome to Ms. Freedy's 4th Grade Class!!

Hello students and families!  I have missed you all greatly.  I have now updated the page to include an instructional calendar to reflect the standards that have been already taught as well as activities and resources for continued educational practice at this time.  Please see below!!

Instructional Calendar.docx

As always, please contact me with any questions, concerns, or comments.  I miss you all and would love to hear from you!

In a continuing effort to provide online learning opportunities I have included websites and suggested activities.  Please note.  Although many of these are approved websites, access them at your own risk.

Suggested Reading Activities

Benchmark Universe

Access Benchmark Universe through your Clever account.  The site is listed under “favorites.”  Once logged on, go to assignments.  Here you will find posters explaining how to summarize nonfiction texts.  Here you will also have several opportunities to practice your summarizing skills while reviewing important content we have learned in social studies.

Read Works

If you have not already done so- please register online to this website so you can access the class assignments.  I have posted three reading passages, with questions and vocabulary study.

Here is how to get your students set up!  Please have students write down their new password if they choose to change it- I would encourage them not to change it since the password assigned is so easy to remember.  3

How to get students to their assignments

1. Have students go towww.readworks.org/student

2. Students enter class code KUZLMQ

3. Tell your students that their default password is 1234

Note: Students can change their passwords when they log in, and you can change student passwords on this page.

https://www.readworks.org/

Suggested reads and activities from Read Works.  Don’t forget to answer the questions at the end of each passage.

1. Who Wants a Spiny Snack?

Activity: Draw an illustration of the Puffer fish and label the body parts that are used to protect itself against predators.  Then create a new sea creature.  What adaptations will it need to protect itself?  Label the body parts and explain how they are used to shield itself against predators.

2. The Magic Glasses

Writing Prompt: Describe a time you were embarrassed.  Compare your situation to Violet’s experience

3.Your Recycled House

Activity: Create a house out of recyclable items from your house.  Items might include cereal boxes, plastic water bottles, or glass jars.  The possibilities are endless.  Take a picture of your creation.  I would love to see it!

K12 Reader

https://www.k12reader.com/subject/reading-skills/reading-comprehension/4th-grade-reading-comprehension-worksheets/

This site provides numerous free opportunities to practice reading comprehension skills such as main idea, summarizing, story elements, etc.  This week my suggested focus is cause and effect.  Follow the link above and then on the left-hand side under “Reading Skills” choose “cause and effect”.  There are several worksheets that will pop up. I recommend the following.

Cause and Effect Match Them!

Find the Cause and Effect.

Other focused areas I recommend is main idea, fact and opinion, character traits, and context clues

World Book Online

This can be accessed through your clever account.  Check out the following.

Ebooks: Choose a book to read.  Write about what you read.  What is the most important thing you learned?  What surprised you the most?  What else would you like to learn about the topic.

Kids: Here there are many activities to choose from.

  • Click on Compare Places”.  Choose two continents and create a Venn diagram comparing them.

  • Click on “Important People”.  Choose someone you want to know more about and write down five interesting facts you learned about your person.

  • Click on “World of Animals”.  Compare and contrast different reptiles or different bugs.

  • Click on “Pictures and Videos”.  Here you will find interesting information and beautiful pictures on a variety of subjects.  Watch the video on Polar Animals and Glaciers.  What did you learn?

Fun Brain

This is also a free website that has a large selection of books you can access and read.  Challenge your self by reading different genres.  I would love to hear about a myth or biography you read.

https://www.funbrain.com/books

Suggested Writing Activities

Book Review: Do a review on a book you just read.  A book review is similar to grading an assignment.  What did you think about the book?  What did you like or dislike about it?  What genre is it?  Would you recommend it?

Letter to the Author: Write a letter to the author of a book you just read.  Explain what you liked and disliked about the book.  Think of three questions to ask the author.

Story Boards: Create a story board of a book just read.  Story boards are similar to comic strips.  Draw six boxes on paper and in each box capture an important event that happened in the story.  This activity is best to use for fiction stories.  Make sure your boxes are in chronological order.

Suggested Writing Activities

If you could have any super power for a day, what would you choose?  Describe what a day would be like with this super power.

Pretend you are an animal for a day.  Which animal would you choose? Describe what your day would look like.

You just found a mysterious treasure box in your back yard.  Describe the contents of the box.

Pretend you just traveled to the year 3000.  Describe what life is like?  How is similar and different from life today.

Create a story from the perspective of a child who cannot stop growing.  What are the pros and cons?

*In a continuing effort to provide online learning opportunities, I have included websites and suggested activities. Please note. Although many of these are approved websites, access them at your own risk.

Suggested Math Activities

Online Resources – most of these support number sense, computation and fractions. These websites were suggested by the PWCS Math department.

https://www.origoeducation.com/resources/focus-on-fractions-activities-grades-1-6/

• SPLAT! – Fun, very powerful, highly interactive number sense activities. Students must find the mystery number that has been covered by the splats.

https://stevewyborney.com/2017/02/splat/

• Esti-Mysteries – Estimation Meets Math Mysteries. Each image invites students to wonder what number is represented by the image. As you click through the each Esti-Mystery, clues will appear that will allow the students to use math concepts to narrow the set of possibilities.

https://stevewyborney.com/2018/11/esti-mysteries-estimation-meets-math-mysteries/

• Math Words and Ideas – short sequences, in English and Spanish, for students to review and practice content, grades K-5. Includes interactive manipulatives, etc.

https://media.pk12ls.com/curriculum/math/Investigations3/gamecenter/eng

Activities and Games

These are links to VDOE lessons that provide review to some concepts that were not addressed in the above links. At the top, it lists the items that you will need in order to complete the activity. Most of these items can be replaced with common household items. The instructions are included for each lesson.
